Young Adults Mentoring Program launches with a trip to the Barclays Center

Shamel and D'Marco pose together at the Barclays Center during their first mentorship session

On Tuesday, Lantern client Shamel and mentor D’Marco met up for the first outing for our new Young Adults Mentoring Program. Shamel, who is 22, is majoring in Human Services at Bronx Community College and has been a mentor himself. Working for the Safe In My Brother’s Arms program in Brooklyn, he mentored homeless teenage boys, helping mediate crisis situations with family members, organizing activities, helping with school work, and being the “big brother” they needed. Now, he’s looking for a mentor himself as he plans a career in community relations.

D’Marco, who is Director of Global Partnerships at the Barclays Center, broke the ice by inviting Shamel to the stadium and showed him around. Shamel says he was blown away by the VIP treatment, and they even got around to talking about how he can begin exploring opportunities in his field of study.
