Lantern opened our first fitness centers nearly a year ago, supporting treatment of some of the most prominent health problems in our clients, including hypertension, diabetes, obesity, depression, anxiety, and substance use issues.
Tony started using the Clover Hall fitness center as soon as it opened, and is a regular at fitness instructor and social worker David Brand’s Body Conditioning Class. Now, he works out on his own for an hour and a half every Monday through Thursday. His regular routine includes two miles on the treadmill, planks, 100 sit ups, 100 push ups and weight lifting. On Fridays, Tony meets with David for a personal training session and participates in the class.
“I wanted to do something, not just sit around anymore,” he says. “Now I have more energy, sleep better, stay focused. When I’m upset, I work it out at the gym. It makes me feel younger, lighter, less stressed.”
Tony hit a milestone recently when he ran 7.5 miles on the treadmill. His advice? “Start lightly, and work together with others to achieve your goals.”
Lantern will soon open our third fitness center, in the Bronx.
