Leslie Abbey, Interim Executive Director, sent the following message to Lantern Community Services staff this morning, in support of International Women’s Day 2017.
This International Women’s Day, Lantern Community Services champions the vital contribution of women to our organization, and supportive housing, homelessness and social services more broadly. Nearly two-thirds of our staff identify as women. All of our Executive Team and more than half of our Board of Directors identify as women. Without the work of women, social services as we know them would quite simply collapse.
We’ll be marking today on social media by highlighting women – past and present – who have made a contribution to social services and ending homelessness. We’ll also be highlighting campaigns we’re already involved in, such as Restore Opportunity which calls for better funding for human services contracts. People are paid less in our sector in part because work traditionally done by women is valued less, and this needs to change.
Happy International Women’s Day!
