Supportive housing can be really successful in transforming people’s lives, getting them to a point where they feel healthy, happy and financially stable. At this stage, some people start to look beyond supportive housing and dream of living in their own apartment independently.

Lantern is one of four New York City organizations piloting the Moving On initiative, with the support of the Corporation for Supportive Housing and the Robin Hood Foundation.

In April 2016, as part of the first cohort, we were the first to move a client out to her new apartment in the Bronx. With this support, we have been able to identify clients who want to move out, and give them the resources they need to make it happen.

Our Housing Transitions Specialist helps clients apply for a voucher and One Shot Deal funding from the City, and helps them search for a home in a neighborhood where they would like to live. Through our partnership with Operation HOPE, everyone planning to move receives one-on-one financial and credit counseling. When a client has found a new home and is ready to move, we can help cover the cost of moving. After they move, we stay in touch to make sure they know where to find services in their new community, and that they continue to thrive.
