Lantern volunteers make a real difference to the lives of the formerly homeless people living in our supportive housing.
Our volunteers use their skills to help Lantern residents with their education and getting into work, with nutrition and healthy eating, and with self-expression and the arts.
“The team is terrific and welcomed me to be part of the experience. I thought volunteering was about giving your time and effort. What I learned was that I get back so much more than I give.” – Gayle, Fresh Food Box volunteer.
Here’s just some of the things volunteers do for Lantern:
- Assist Lantern staff at weekly Fresh Food Box events, distributing food, discussing nutrition, and sharing recipe ideas with formerly homeless residents
- Assist Lantern’s art therapists with our arts activities, such as jewelry-making
- Tutor adults to help them pass their TASC (formerly GED) test (through NY Cares)
- Attend one-off volunteering events, like distributing food at a Thanksgiving meal or wrapping Holiday gifts.
Please note that most of our volunteering opportunities are during the day on weekdays (9 am – 6 pm).
